World classics, academic books in Arabic pull crowds

The 19th edition of the Muscat International Book Fair going on at the Oman International Exhibition Centre is one of the largest collections of titles from across the globe.
As many as 570 publishers from 26 countries with more than 160,000 titles under one roof are proving to be an ideal source to own one’s favourite titles. A wide collection of various encyclopedias, dictionaries, books in addition to some educational materials are being showcased at the MIBF 2014 venue. There is also host of cultural events, lectures, poetry recitals and storytelling on the sideline of the fair.
“I believe this Book Fair is a unique opportunity to buy my favourite books while seeing the other international books and publishers. And more than that, I’m getting a rare opportunity to meet with some of the acclaimed authors who come to the Fair”, Naseeha al Zadjali, an avid reader who works for a publishing company said.
But what makes the annual fair even more attractive is the number of prize-winning authors and publishers from various parts of the world who are currently participating in the fair with most of them having ‘Meet the Author’ programme on different days.
A highly anticipated annual books’ galore by academicians, schools, colleges and universities, and book-lovers alike, the Fair hosts diverse books on topics that vary from science to art, and from technology to children’s literature among other titles to reckon with.
Books that give insights into world classics, the super natural characters of children that have always pushed them out of the boundaries of their imagination, and English language books are resulting in crammed walkways inside the mammoth hall.
One can easily make out the fact that the keen reading habits of the sultanate are being reiterated in full at the various pavilions of the MIBF this year, where an ever-growing crowd of people are thronging the stalls to browse, buy and enjoy the vast collection of books.
The range and array of books this year are mind-boggling, as newer categories and wider collections are making their way to the book loving public.
Arabic translations of world classics, such as Homer’s Illiad, Shakespeare’s Othello and Hamlet, A Tale of Two Cities, David Copperfield, Henry and his six wives by Janet Hardy Gould, Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina, Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment and a wide spectrum of IT books on programming, networking and graphic designing are proving to be most popular, with students and youngsters seeking them out, both for general reading and academic purposes.
Children’s books too, are proving to be hugely popular, with both abridged and fuller versions of classics, children’s stories and tales from across the world and books teaching the rudiments of the English language, being sought after by children.
As you enter, on to your left side you will notice a centre that offers solutions to the children’s learning difficulties.
“We are here to take care of the children who have learning problems at any level and with scientific and psychiatric approach and psychometric evaluation, we can assist the kids learn faster”, Samah al Awladthani, told the Observer. She added that the small kiosk has been receiving parents with their kids from most of the regions and wilayats and it is their motto to help children learn and score better at their academics.
