Shabab Oman II to revive glorious heritage — VLISSINGEN — Assigned by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, Ahmed bin Nasser bin Hamad al Mehrzi, Minister of Tourism, yesterday presided over the ceremony held by the Royal Navy of Oman (RNO) for the launching and naming of the new Shabab Oman vessel, replacing the old one, in this Dutch city. The minister said expressed his happiness to celebrate the launch of the second version of the RNO “Shabab Oman”. He added that this vessel is one of the fruits of the Blessed Renaissance and the Royal care and attention of His Majesty the Sultan. He said that this vessel comes as part of the project “Orchid” which was signed by RNO with the Damen, the Dutch company, for the design and construction of the vessel according to the latest world standards and specifications for sailing ships.
Al Mehrzi pointed out that this ambassador-at-large “Shabab Oman” and the well-experienced crew will continue to work with dedication and devotion to documenting the human relation of Omanis with the sea, spreading love and peace of the Omani people, to the rest of the world and establishing authentic Omani culture in the minds of visitors to the vessel through its participation in various festivals and international events in the future, in addition to its contribution to the training of Omani sailors on sailing. The Commander of RNO in his speech at the inauguration ceremony, expressing his pleasure over the launching of the RNO Shabab Oman vessel, which is one of the fruits of the Blessed Renaissance and the Royal care and attention of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces in a bid to modernise and develop the RNO, and this was the reason that the Ministry of Defence signed a contract with the Dutch Damen to design and manufacture the RNO Shabab Oman vessel as per the latest international standards for sailing ships.
Rear Admiral Abdullah bin Khamis al Raisi, Commander of RNO,  affirmed that the vessel will play the same role played by the former sailing ship to represent the Sultanate in the international fora. The Director of Damen for shipbuilding said in a his speech that the building of Shabab Oman vessel and its potentials in terms of design and modern instruments and equipment, will play a significant role in the naval task instead of the former ship. The Tourism Minister toured the Shabab Oman vessel, accompanied by the Commander of RNO, ambassador of the Sultanate to the Kingdom of the Netherlands and senior guests. The RNO Shabab Oman comes within the framework of the project “Orchid” signed by the Sultanate with the company implementing the project.
Sayyid Mohammed bin Harib al Said, Sultanate’s Ambassador to the Netherlands, officials and senior officers of the Sultan’s Armed Forces and members of a team overseeing the project (Orchid) for building the vessel took part in the launching ceremony. A number of Dutch military and civilian senior officials and a collection of invitees also attended the ceremony. The ceremony began with the Royal anthem and the Royal Dutch anthem. The tourism minister announced the launching and naming of the vessel.
