Sailor of the Year awards presented
MUSCAT — Oman Sail announced the winners of their prestigious 2014 Sailor of the Year Awards at a grand prize-giving ceremony attended by an array of guests and dignitaries at the Al Bustan Palace in Muscat.
Winners of the seven categories were revealed with several of Oman’s rising sailing stars climbing the stage to receive their awards in recognition of their achievements and efforts over in 2013.
The winners in all seven categories had outstanding years. Musab al Hadi and Hashim al Rashidi who won the Outstanding Male Race Team Performance category sponsored by Renaissance Services, won the Extreme Sailing Series on The Wave Muscat who once again won the Outstanding International Race Team after two consecutive championship crowns.
The Outstanding Female Race Team Performance category sponsored by Oman LNG went to three woman who compete on Oman Sail’s J80 al Thuraya Bank Muscat — Ibtisam al Salmi, Rajaa al Owaisi and Raiya al Habsi. The Technical Support Award went to Hilal al Zadjali, a member of The Wave Muscat’s shore crew whose hard work earned plaudits among the judges, as did all the winners.
Male Coach of the year was Mohammed al Araimi and the Female Coach of the year Nashwa al Kindi. Nashwa was also 2013 Female Coach of the year and recently set a record for becoming the first recorded Arab woman to make an oceanic crossing when she sailed from Mumbai to Muscat with Hilary Lister. This year, this category was also presented with Rolex watches as gifts from Khimji Ramdas.
The highlight of the evening was when twenty children climbed up to the stage to receive the Sailing School Youth Team award, presented by Omantel, which went to Marina Bandar Rowdha after the school came out on top in four ranking races and an Interschool regatta. Saleh al Jabri, centre manager of Marina Bandar Rowdha Sailing School, who accompanied the children to stage said: “We are proud of this achievement and the performance of the youth that have been trained at Marina Bandar Rowdha. We are dedicating our efforts to developing and enhancing the skills of these youngsters who will one day become Olympic Champions.”
Stephen Thomas, CEO of Renaissance Services, said, “We are delighted to be sponsoring this event for another year and to recognise the talent of these remarkable individuals at Oman Sail. Congratulations to all the nominees and, of course, the winners. We wish them more success over the coming months and years.”
