Say no to vandalism, theft of public property
1399544985732632700By Ali Ahmed al Riyami — Seeking a halt to the growing menace of theft and vandalism to public properties and utilities, the ‘Omanuna Amanah (Treasure Oman) National Campaign’ for the preservation of vital services and public property — an ROP initiative managed by Muscat Electricity Distribution Company (MEDC) — is gaining ground in its mission to promote greater public awareness and concern and in putting a halt to this scourge. The fact is, public utilities and properties are there for the benefit of the community at large and, in this sense, it is everybody’s concern; everyone has a part to play in helping to prevent these unlawful activities from taking place. We must all act as one in performing our civic duty of ‘saying no to vandalism and theft of public property’.
There are already 23 government bodies and public sector companies taking part in it and under the ‘Let’s preserve the nation’s assets’ slogan they have joined hands and are working hard to bring about an end to these destructive acts that not only pose a danger to the perpetrators, but can cause fatalities, electrical power-cuts and unnecessary inconvenience to the community. The estimated cost of vandalism in the Sultanate, from 2011-2013, is over RO 2,088,000. As outlined, objectives of the campaign are to: raise awareness among members of the community; define laws and regulations; define the workers in the trade and rules and regulations of the scrap trade; urge members of the community to report acts of vandalism; achieve positive results to decrease acts of vandalism and tampering.
1399545011572633000In incorporating the Omanuna Amanah concept, it must be recognised that it is each one’s responsibility to preserve Oman’s public assets and utilities. And, in this light, the campaign addresses the negative consequences of vandalism and the threat it poses to public utilities and the public at large — which has led to loss of lives and ruin of properties. In an endeavour to preserve Oman’s precious public utilities, the aims of the campaign include spreading awareness, bringing positive change and incorporating course corrections where needed. This can only be achieved and come to a successful outcome with the strategic partnership and involvement of government and private organisations and the public.
The campaign was brought to the fore by the ROP and it has worked to create a platform for both government organisations and affected private sector companies to come together and act as one against the threat of damage to public and private properties — enabling the two sectors to have a unified voice against vandalism. Regular workshops and programmes are planned, in partnership with OCCI — a workshop was held here at the end of last month to introduce the rules and regulations of this activity, while the use of mass media allows for the campaign to spread far and wide. Other ways in which the campaign has and will be brought to the public’s attention are through events, exhibitions, and talks at women’s societies and volunteer groups in the Wilayats.
1399545096632637400In the process and in order to eliminate these negative and illegal practices, the campaign seeks everyone’s contribution and cooperation in preserving public utilities and reporting acts of vandalism and theft to the ROP. Every effort helps in meeting the objectives of Omanuna Amanah, which are to create awareness, educate, inform and strengthen the ideals of people to preserve public utilities. This is achieved by:
• Creating awareness amongst residents and citizens,
• Communicating laws and regulations to stakeholders,
• Communicating laws and regulations to workers involved in scrap trade,
• Achieving positive results through campaign success monitoring, measurement and documentation,
• Gaining public support and confidence in reporting suspicious activities, tampering of public utilities, vandalism and the like.
Each person can make a difference; every thought counts and every little measure adds up. Whether individually or as part of an organisation, a positive difference can be made for the preservation of Oman’s precious public utilities.
