Schoolchildren to perform at Opera
By Lakshmi Kothaneth — MUSCAT — Come new season at Royal Opera House Muscat (ROHM), students from Omani schools will be on stage for an Opera performance. The exciting venture is yet another feather for the Education and Outreach Programme of Royal Opera House Muscat. An interactive children opera performance is to be presented for the first time in the region with the participation of hundreds of Omani students in an educational, recreational and creative environment. Speaking to The Talk on omanobserver.om, Dr Nasser al Taee, adviser to the Board of Education and Outreach said the season will be seeing a new opera specially designed for children. It will be collaborated with hundreds of students who will be participating in the actual performance.
“They will not be passive audience attending the opera, but now they get a chance to sing and be with the rest of the artists,” explained Dr Al Taee. Royal Opera House Muscat’s Education and Outreach Programme is currently working with the Ministry of Education to start from day one of the next academic year training on performing opera by giving special courses to the teachers who will be transferring the knowledge to the studies. Accordingly, students will be ready to perform in April. “The teachers are our tools because we cannot visit each single school. We will help the teachers with art and music. We will provide them all the tools in terms of designing costumes, specifications of each character and so on,” described Dr Al Taee.

The new venture is expected to create a learning experience for the teachers and a great amount of excitement for the children while taking them to another level of art performance. Meanwhile, ROHM will continue the efforts that were introduced last summer, offering internships and for college and high school students to gain hands-on experience as early as possible and to introduce them to basic technical, artistic and administrative aspects involved in the activities of Royal Opera House Muscat. Education and Outreach Programme has been an integral part of Royal Opera House Muscat from the very beginning in 2011. The complete interview can be viewed with The Talk on omanobserver.om
