Raising awareness to improve and maintain coastal habitat
By Zainab al Nasseri -
THE Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs conducted a programme for environmental education and a campaign to plant mangroves in Wilayat Al Jazer, Wusta Governorate. The two-day event aimed to enhance environmental concepts among students and raise awareness to conserve natural resources, especially marine resources because of their significance to the marine ecology system.
The first day included a visit to Al Khadra School for Basic Education. A marine specialist from the ministry delivered a lecture to introduce audiences to mangrove, their importance and their role in a wild diversity within the bays. The programme also included several contests related to environmental topics like birds and trees.
On the second day, a campaign to farm mangroves was held with the participation of Al Khadra School students and Omani Women Association in Al Jazer. The ministry’s delegation first explained the ways of mangroves culture and illustrated types of biological diversity in the bays there.
Another trip to watch and learn about sea birds was conducted besides cleaning the bay of Qaisad. This campaign is considered the first one in terms of mangroves planting in this specific bay in Al Jazer. At the end of the day, around thousand mangrove trees were farmed.
The ministry has farmed another 14,000 mangroves in Al Wusta Governorate so far, in both Darf and Gawi bays, since the inception of the mangroves farming campaign in 2005.
